Putting together this sample publication has been a fantastic experience. I was able to relive the experience of drawing on location in over 44 countries and 75 cities in 18 months whilst travelling with my best friend and husband. Every sketch has been done on location and with that comes the rawness of the scene, the memories forever immortalised in watercolour sketches.
Sneak Preview
Of course not every single sketch has been produced in this book. It has been a mixture of what worked in the layout, and the quality of the images at the end of the day. I posted my sketch books from everywhere once filled and they all got back in one piece. Opening the parcels were like opening presents I had pre-ordered from Santa, and his reindeers got it right! With the exception of a hole being punched into the box sent from Peru, all parcels were intact. Perhaps they thought there was something more tangibly valuable than scribbles by a wandering artist.
Bali Sketches
Below are pages from the book and a snippet of sketches in Bali. With the temple at Tanah lot on the edge of a cliff at sunset. Drawing while a crowd of tourists surrounded me may seem daunting, but I managed to block them out and concentrate on the process. Other images are from fire shows and street festivals we happened upon while in Bali.
Sketches in the Galapagos
With sea lions and christmas coloured iguanas just a few steps away from my sketch book, I was right in the middle of Darwin’s Dream. I can still feel the heat of the sun and smell the smelly sea lions basking in the sun while iguanas languidly turned their heads from side to side.
Want a copy?
This is a post to get a sense of whether its worth publishing a book like this. The book contains 119 pages with musings and sketches through out of travels in different locations. It is meant to inspire people to doodle and infuse a little more creativity in their lives again. If you are someone who loved to draw when you were little, then I hope you can pick up a pencil, brush or pen and just take in the world around you. You never know what may come of it. But if you are someone that will not draw, then hopefully you can look at parts of the world a little differently through these sketches. If there is interest out there to get a copy of the book, I will publish more, so please comment on this post and let me know your thoughts!
Thank you
I am grateful to Karien Lambert www.photographicbooks.com who initially compiled our wedding books, for taking on this project and helping to produce a piece of work I am so very proud of. Thank you also to Tayamikila Darch and Fidel Mbhele for transporting three samples from Cape Town to London. The courier fees would have not make it worthwhile at this stage. Thank you to my husband Thomas Ian Robson for patiently waiting as I sketched a scene or taking photos to capture the process.
Thanks for reading!
