Impressions of Zona Colonial

prints for blog 8

Ever since I arrived in Santo Domingo, I have been inspired by the Zona Colonial. Still under construction and a long way to go compared to many historical sites in the world, it still holds a charm that for now at least captures many cruise lines albeit for only half a days visit. I have come to know people who live in the Zona Colonial and every visit renders something new to look at something fresh.

During my first few months in Santo Domingo, when I didn’t know anyone or have any place to be, I would spend my days walking around and getting a feel for a place through my pocket sketchbook and watercolours. Even whilst heavily pregnant, I would spend mornings sketching and friends like Cealesta and Lynnette would stop by to chat to me as I sketched providing lively chats as I sketched our surroundings. Sometimes when it got too hot, I would go into the cool air conditioned Cathedral to draw or just watch boatloads of tourists stream in and take in their surrounds.

The prints that I have chosen to produce are a collection of these impressions during this time, and they are impressions of a new place that we came to live in, whilst waiting for our son. Each sketch took under two hours to produce and I did not rework them at home as I wanted to preserve the moment in time, watching the world around me as I chatted to new friends.

Drawing in the Zona

I continue to go back to the Zona Colonial to capture impressions and hope to create an even greater body of work. But for now, I am happy to present four prints for sale. The artwork itself is 6 by 8 inches and mounted on 2 inches of off white card. I have a few in warm grey. Orders for different frames are available too.
